4th ESO Global Murals 0809

Like 2 years ago we've taken part in a Global Youth Murals exhibion designing a mural which illustrated our ideas for peace. This project has also been run toghether with Nuri Gussinyer, the arts teacher from the school. In fact she has done the most of it.
The Murals were exhibited at PTPI's annual global youth forum and other locations.

The process and its symbolism

We have done this project with students aged 15 years old at 4th course from secondary compulsory education. They are all from a state school in Olot, Catalonia Spain.

We discussed the topic of PEACE in class so as to reach to an agreement on which icon symbolized peace on its global meaning.

The OPEN HAND was mostly chosen and we started to work on its elaboration having the open hand as our common symbol.

Each single student made his/her own and personal interpretation of what PEACE meant. There is one hand for every student who took part in the project. All of them form a global mural together with open white hands as well as peace messages and other peace symbols stamped on their hands so as to remember the different representations of peace.

Here you have an album of the process. Enjoy it!

Our students from 2S3 in IES BOSC DE LA COMA are taking part in an exchange programme with students from st Gregory school in Tucson, Arizona in the USA. We are exchanging letters and pictures telling about ourselves. The students in the USA write in Spanish mainly but they also use English to answer the questions our students ask.
In our first letters students talked about themselves and sent some pictures which you can see in this album.

Trip to Malahide!

Some of our students have taken part in the project we are involved. The aim of the project is to encourage students to speak English as much as possible. If you want to learn about it, just go to our school web site or click the link provided. You can also have a look at the Catalan programme we gave to their parents.

These group of students have spent a whole week in Malahide, Ireland so as to improve their oral expression. They have attented 20 hours speaking lessons in U-learn school in Malahide and have stayed with Irish families. Apart from that, they've done other activities such asplaying bowling in Cooloch leisure centre, seen HULK at the Pavillions Shopping Centre in Swords, visited Dublin, watched a greyhound race,

Here you'll find some of the pictures we took.

Remembering 4S3 from course 2006-2007

I've decided to store all those activities in English I've enjoyed doing with my students and I remember this one specially.

4S3 students took part in a project together with some students from IES Montsacopa in the same city of OLOT.

During the whole term the students exchanged some of their productions in English such as Identity cards, postcards, family trees, letters, posters ..etc. with some studnents from another High school from Olot. Everything was written in English using a NICKNAME. Nobody knew who they were writting to. In our class we had: Cristina Aguilera, Paulina Rubio ,Ronaldihno, Brad Pitt, Hilary Duff among others.

At the end of the term both High schools made a meeting in the countryside near home where the students were suposed to find out their pen pals. Here you can look at the pictures we took during their interviews.

THE SYMBOLISM OF OUR MURAL

TITLE: PEACE DOVE

This poster symbolizes the joining, the joining of the differences, the joining we need to work for a common aim : The PEACE AND RESPECT among villages, among people, in fact among cultures.

We’ve used a universal symbol like the dove holding an olive branch in its beak. This image figures the storm is over and the earth is again in calm.

Each student has worked on its own dove individually, then we’ve fit them in the mural so as to gather them all regardless of their size, their colour, their activity or their origin. Each dove longs for a peaceful world where everybody has the same rights.

The doves have been carved using the linoleum technique. Once they’ve already been printed, the students have stuck the letters in collage and finally the have splashed the background and the leaves using Chinese ink.

Their photographer sent images of the Global Youth Murals exhibit from November-December. A few are attached for our students to enjoy.

We did have a great time while we learnt English using a different methodology. It's a pity I can't up load their comments because they were all written down in ink.
